Sala Kaew Ku
Sala Kaew Ku is a surreal sculpture park, just outside of the town part of Nong Khai, Thailand. Its full of oddball massive sculptures which relate to Buddhism or Hinduism in one way or another. Maybe I didn’t do my research — or because I still can’t read Thai (yet!) — the sculptures are just kinda bizarre.
The unimpressive sign for the park which opens up to an impressive, in number and size, variety of sculptures.
These dogs are barking at an elephant. But dig the crazy dog sculptures behind the elephant where they’re getting ready to attack the elephant. Just crazy!
On an unrelated note, here’s what I think is a reference to good versus evil. For a sense of scale, reference the red trash bin in the lower left corner.
The piece de resistance of the park is the Wheel of Life. These statues are on the outside, but obviously people are giving alms and praying to these sculptures as seen in the saffron strings tied around the hands and horns.
And here’s the center of the wheel of life. Each of the extended hands represents the senses. Um, it’s super symbolic which is why I won’t go into detail, but will gladly offer up the description (thanks to the Mut Mee Guesthouse) if you click here.
